Why I love March Madness…

We paid our 3.99 to watch unlimited coverage of March Madness on our computers around 12:30 this afternoon.  Since then, we’ve had at least one computer playing a game.  Meanwhile, I typed four pages of an essay on my other computer, made dinner, packed for a conference in Mississippi, bathed three kids, fed Sidney twice, pumped once, and did a little birthday party research on Pinterest.  All while watching game after game.  We even let the kids have a picnic in front of Elmo in the playroom so we could keep watching over dinner.

For me with sports, it’s feast or famine during the year.  In these first few days and throughout the tourney, I watch more basketball, more sports even, than I do for the rest of the year.  Of course, this year it might end up being a little less depending on what work I can accomplish with the games on…

Why do I love March Madness?  Oh, let me count the ways…

1.  The Boss Button.  If I have access to the games online, you know what I’m talking about.

2.  The Toyota commercials.  So good.

3.  Belmont, Baby!  Yes, I picked them into the final four.  I’m tired of Georgetown killing my bracket with their early exits.  This year I decided to take a stand.

4.  It’s anybody’s game!  Well, unless you are a 16 seed…

5.  The energy of it all: so many games back to back to back.  What a thrill!

6.  There’s always a Cinderella who comes to the Big Dance.

7.  The alliteration: Selection Sunday…Tip-off Thursday…March Madness.  That makes me happy.

8.  No matter how much time I put into perfecting my bracket (just twenty minutes this year), I still stink it up!

9.  But not as bad as Shawn or my dad…:)

10.  The drives, the threes, the boards, the blocks, the stops, the moves.  There’s no better reason to throw a fist pump than a slashing drive through the paint: spin, lay-up, two points, done.  Count it.  Boom.

  1. Love this. March Madness Live was literally the best $3.99 I have ever spent. I watched Texas/Cincy in a meeting at work, Kentucky/Iowa State on the bus, and even listened to Georgetown/NC state while going for a run. Can’t believe I ever lived without it!

  2. Why I love March Madness: Because it makes me appreciate my local sports bar that much more. I can’t even get IN now, given all the rowdy/excited/sometimes-rabid fans. I’ll be looking forward to wings and wine in a few weeks, when the festivities have died down…

But I do love seeing the excitement play out — now if only I could find a seat! 😉

  3. I can’t separate March Madness from Dick Vitale. Both over the top, both (arguably) past their prime, but both still entertaining.

    “Boom baby!”

  4. GT made it passed Belmont and then killed my bracket. Anyway, these have been awesome games. Right there with you. watching as much as I can. 🙂

  5. GO GREEN. GO WHITE. I love March Madness and hope my Michigan State Spartans don’t disappoint. (I stink at brackets, too. Except the year I picked teams by whether I liked their mascot – I won the pool that year).

    • Mascots: What a great idea for bracket selection! Yeah, going with the team that faces GT apparently wasn’t the best move for a successful bracket. I am still beating my husband, though.

  6. March Madness it is. Everyone in my household is Mad over basketball, but I get plenty of it on TV. The thought of it streaming on the computer, oh my. I would never get my husband out the door to work or kids to school. As is I hear the droid constantly pinging with score updates.
Family life will return when March ends. Until then I surrender and will join the troops infront of the TV.
I get my time when The French Open, Wimbleton and the US Open dominates in the summer. Perhaps I can stream that over the computer?

  7. I definitely agree with you. I wrote a post about how to pick a winning bracket by playing percentages. I was a little nervous, but I had to put my name behind it, but I have won 80% of the games so far. Not bad for this year’s craziness.

My wife really gets into it too. She usually only pays attention to one team, but this year I have caught her cheering for the “little guys.”

  8. Jayhawk loving the basketball ! My son is a deployed Navy pilot and a KU Jayhawk too and can’t see the games! Sigh.

  9. Unlike you, I’m not a fan of alliteration. In fact, I absolutely abhor abundant alliteration. However, there are few things in life as awesome as a March Madness buzzer beater – whether it’s in the Final Four, the Elite Eight, the Sweet Sixteen or even earlier. Enjoy the rest of the tourney, and let’s hope that someday a 16-seed will advance!

  10. I love March Madness but I’ve lost all of my money from these crazy upsets! All of my brackets are completely messed up. Let’s go Buckeyes!

  11. Congrats on Freshly Pressed!

Keep in mind that no 15 seed has ever won a second-round game after upsetting a No. 2 seed in the first round. That will be helpful for next year’s bracket!

I’ve done some March Madness writing over at http://breslinsports.com — hope you check it out!

  12. Just found your blog – had to comment because I LOVE MARCH MADNESS! I’m a Kansas alumni and have been addicted to the tournament for as long as I can remember 🙂 I don’t have access to the online games and I’m very intrigued about what the “boss button” is, haha!

  13. The first weekend of March Madness is probably the best weekend of the year. 10 a.m. Thursday until 10 p.m. Sunday night, in my time zone. My bracket? Uh, yeah….Missouri happened. Second straight year my pick for champion died in the first round.

  14. March Madness definitely has people going crazy. You were right again about G-Town, eliminated yet once again. The Final Four is almost final… we have either Kentucky or Ohio St. winning it all.
